Schools and Education in Slovakia
There are public, private and church schools providing education in the Slovak language. There are also bilingual and private international schools offering English, German, Hungarian or French language curriculum.
School types by level:
- Kindergartens or Preschools (age: 2-6 years)
- Primary schools: the first 5 years of compulsory education (age 6-10 yeras)
- Secondary schools (15-19 years) providing higher education and higher professional education (gymnasium, secondary vocational, secondary specialized, aprentice)
- Universities (beyond 19 years) – offering bachelor’s, master’s and PHD study
A school year at Slovak primary and secondary schools is divided in two terms: The first term from September 1 to end of January and the second term from 1st February to 30th June. There is usually one week break after the first term. Main school holidays are from July 1-August 31. Students receive school reports after each school term.
