According to the Act on Residence of Foreign Nationals No. 48/2002 everyone, who is not a citizen of the Slovak Republic is considered to be a foreign national. He/she is obliged to notify the police authority of place of residence within 10 days since the entry to Slovakia. Residence permit is required for a stay longer than 90 days.
It is necessary to apply in person for a residence permit either at the Slovak Embassy in your contry (before arriving to Slovakia) or at the Police station (Foreign police section) in Slovakia. Each type of residence permit (temporary RP, permanent RP or tolerated stay) is guided by specific rules and conditions.

For Residence of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss Federation citizens who intend to reside on the territory of the Slovak Republic for a period of more than three months a special legal regime applies. If they intend to stay longer 3 months in the territory of the Slovak republic they can apply for a card confirming their permanent residence permit .
