Pipelines & Politics: How Slovakia Plans to Stay Warm this Winter
Sunday, November 15, 2009 6:30 - 8:00 pm
Cafe Roland
As we enter the heating season, memories of the shut-down last year in natural gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine begin to resurface. Can such a scenario happen again, and what has been done in the meantime to mitigate the impact of such a scenario? Have the political conflicts between Slovakia's neighbors to the east been resolved so as to ensure the pipelines stay open? And with respect to the future, should Slovakia still rely on Russian gas, and what are the alternatives?
Dr. Hans-Gilbert Meyer, a member of the Board of Directors of SPP, the main gas supplier in Slovakia and as the SPP group responsible for the nationwide gas transit and gas distribution business, will address these and other questions at the next current affairs forum (in English) on Sunday, November 15, 2009, at Roland Café, Hlavne Namestie 5. Arrive at 6:30 pm to order coffee and cake, a beer or a glass of wine from the restaurant, and then join the presentation and discussion on the lower level from 6:45 to 8:00 pm.
Dr. Meyer has been on the board of SPP -- a subsidiary of E.ON Ruhrgas International AG, GDF Suez and the Slovak State -- since 2008. In his position on the board he has primary responsibility for gas trading and storage, portfolio optimization and business development. He has held positions with E.ON Ruhrgas AG since 1991, working in Germany and the Netherlands as a gas sales analyst, project manager, gas sales executive and managing director.
Reservations for the forum can be made by sending an email to currentaffairsbratislava@gmail.com. Please include your name and the names of any guests. If you have questions about this program, contact Janna Haug at jannahaug@yahoo.com
