The Global Financial Crisis and the Impact on Slovakia
Sunday, January 25, 2009 6:30 - 8:00 pm
Cafe Roland
Slovakia has experienced some of the highest economic growth rates in Europe in the past several years. But what will be the impact of the global economic crisis on future growth? Neighboring countries, such as Hungary and Ukraine, have sought large IMF loans to help bail them out of the financial crisis. Will Slovakia find itself in a similar position or is the economy strong enough to weather the storm? And how will Slovakia be affected by the downturn in the automotive industry, a sector the country relies heavily on for jobs and economic growth?
Juraj Karpiš of the Institute of Economic and Social Studies (INESS) will address these and other questions at a current affairs forum (in English) on Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Roland Café, Hlavne Namestie 5. Arrive at 6:30 pm to order coffee and cake, a beer or a glass of wine from the restaurant, and then join the presentation and discussion on the lower level from 6:45 to 8:00 pm.
Mr. Karpiš is chairman and founding member of INESS, an independent, non-governmental think tank, which monitors the functioning and financing of the public sector, evaluates the effects of legislative changes on the economy and society and comments on current economic and social issues. Mr. Karpiš served as a financial analyst in various banks and financial institutions in Slovakia and Austria from 2002 to 2005. He also publishes articles on current economic and social issues and is a frequent commentator in the broadcast media.
