She and He in Slovakia: Gender and Age in the Period of Transition

Current Affairs Forum

Sunday, January 24, 2010 6:30 - 8:00 pm, Cafe Roland

The January current affairs forum will feature guest speaker Zora Bútorová on the topic, “She and He in Slovakia: Gender and Age in the Period of Transition.” Ms Bútorová is one of the key figures in public opinion research in Slovakia. From 1999 to 2003, she lived in Washington, D.C., where her husband served as the Ambassador of Slovakia to the US. Currently she is senior research fellow at the Institute for Public Affairs, focusing on political culture, public opinion, and gender relations. She has edited and co-authored a number of books, including most recently, She and He in Slovakia. Gender issues addressed in the book include: women and men in light of society’s expectations; work in the life of women and men; women, men and the private sphere; and the image of women in Slovak media.

Ms. Bútorová will speak at the next current affairs forum (in English) on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at Roland Café (lower level), Hlavne Namestie 5. Arrive at 6:30 pm to order coffee and cake, a beer or a glass of wine, and then participate in the presentation and discussion from 6:45 to 8:00 pm.

Reservations for the forum can be made by sending an email to currentaffairsbratislava@gmail.com. Please include your name and the names of any guests. If you have questions about this program, contact Janna Haug at jannahaug@yahoo.com
