According to the Act on Residence of Foreign Nationals No. 48/2002 is everyone, who is not a citizen of the Slovak Republic is considered to be a foreign national.   A foreign national in Slovakia may apply for one of the following types of the residence permit:

For Residence of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss Federation citizens who intend to reside on the territory of the Slovak Republic for a period of more than three months a special legal regime applies.  They can apply for a card confirming their permanent residence permit on the base of the first permit if they intend to stay longer than 3 months in the territory of the Slovak republic.  The EU/EEA citizen is also obliged to notify the police authority of their place of residence within 10 days since the entry to Slovakia 

If the EU/EEA citizen comes to Slovakia for the purpose of employment, the employer is obliged to notify the local Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family within 7 days of the start of the employment by sending a so-called information card.

It is necessary to apply in person for a residence permit either at the Slovak Embassy in your contry (before arriving to Slovakia) or at the Police station (Foreign police section) in Slovakia. Each type of residence permit is guided by specific rules and conditions
